In the event that your insurance doesn’t cover the cost of one of the medications mentioned in this article or your copayment is very high, you should check different sources to find the best price. While many online pharmacies sell these medications at discounted rates, they may still be using a multi-layer distribution system. This can inject additional cost layers, ultimately creating a higher cost for consumers.

The first thing to understand is that prescription discount cards do not constitute insurance. Coupon cards from drug manufacturers may interact with drug coverage, but those from independent benefit companies – like GoodRx and other similar options – are often used in lieu of insurance.

Prescription drug cards can be used by anyone, but there are some serious limitations in their use. All insurance types, including employer-sponsored, federally subsidized, and no insurance, qualify for using discount drug cards but that doesn’t mean they’re the best option for getting cost-effective access to the prescription medications that you use on a regular basis. Additionally, if you have insurance, anything you pay will be out-of-pocket and will not count toward your deductible.

Patients show their pharmacist either a physical or digital card. Instead of using the patient’s insurance information, the pharmacy processes the prescription using information from the discount card. In this scenario, instead of paying their usual copay, the patient pays a reduced cash price. If the cash price is less than the copay of the patient, it might be a good deal. Unfortunately, this is rarely the situation and patients often find that they’re overpaying even with a prescription drug card. The costs can be significantly reduced when you use NextRx to source your prescriptions.

We don’t accept insurance, but you are likely to pay less for your medications if you use our pharmacy. Copays and deductibles often result in a higher prescription cost when combined for generic drugs. The savings are passed on to you since we do not pay fees to middlemen like insurance companies and plan administrators.
