Amlodipine is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure and chest pain. It belongs to a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers. Calcium channel blockers work by relaxing the muscles of your blood vessels, which lowers your blood pressure and makes it easier for your heart to pump blood. Amlodipine is available as a tablet or an oral solution. It's usually taken once a day with or without food.

The most common side effects of amlodipine are headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, and fatigue. Other common side effects include constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and heartburn. Some people may also experience swelling of the ankles, feet, or legs. If you experience any of these side effects, you should contact your doctor. In rare cases, amlodipine can cause serious side effects such as chest pain or an irregular heartbeat. If you experience these side effects, you should seek medical attention immediately.

One of the most common side effects of amlodipine is increased urination. This occurs because amlodipine relaxes the smooth muscle in the walls of blood vessels, which can lead to an increase in urine production.  In most cases, the increased urination is not harmful and will resolve on its own within a few days. However, if you experience excessive urination or any other side effects that are bothersome or concerning, be sure to consult with your doctor.

Amlodipine has been reported to maintain kidney function in patients with high blood pressure.

When you stop taking amlodipine, the effects of the medication will gradually wear off. This can lead to a rebound effect, where your blood pressure and heart rate increase above their baseline levels. In some cases, this can be accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, and dizziness. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. Stopping amlodipine suddenly can also worsen existing heart conditions. For this reason, it is important to speak with your doctor before stopping the medication.

One common side effect of amlodipine is swelling of the ankles and feet. This is caused by the dilation of blood vessels leading to a build-up of fluid in the tissues. When this happens, the blood vessels are unable to properly circulate blood, leading to congestion and swelling.  In most cases, the swelling will resolve on its own once the body adjusts to the medication. However, if the swelling is severe or does not improve, it is important to speak to a doctor. They may recommend reducing the dosage or discontinuing the use of the medication.
